Visceral Abdominal Massage and Its Unique Healing Benefits
Our Visceral Abdominal Massages are unique specialised therapies that treat your abdomen to improve organ function, circulation, health, and relaxation. They can ease menstrual and menopausal pains, and may optimise fertility.
Visceral abdominal Massage (VAM) is a therapeutic technique that involves the manual manipulation of your abdominal organs to promote overall well-being and enhance digestive, circulatory, and nervous system functions. By realigning and remobilization of internal organs it is known to promote emotional well-being and musculoskeletal health.
This is a powerful healing modality that has been used across cultures for centuries. It has been used in various traditional healing systems, including Chinese medicine, Ayurveda, and indigenous therapies worldwide.
Our unique approach to this therapy enhances digestion, supports detoxification, relieves pain, and promotes your emotional well-being, which makes it a valuable therapy for holistic health.
Following their treatments, many of our clients continue to report profound improvements in their physical and mental health. By integrating regular visceral abdominal massages into their wellness routine, many experienced greater vitality, balance, and overall well-being.
What is Visceral Abdominal Massage?
Our trained therapists perform Visceral Abdominal Massage using gentle, hands-on techniques to manipulate your abdominal area.
During treatments you will lie down, either on your back or side, or in a seated position, depending on our chosen approach. You may be asked to remove upper body clothing but will always be required to keep your chest covered.
Throughout the treatment your therapist will apply gentle, deep pressure to the abdomen, specifically targeting the area around the organs (such as the uterus, ovaries, intestines, and liver). The pressure can vary from light to firm, depending on what’s necessary for the treatment. Intermittently, slow, circular motions, kneading, and gentle stretches may be used to help mobilize your organs, to break down adhesions or scar tissue, and to improve circulation. More work on your diaphragm and surrounding areas may be necessary to release tension there.
You may be guided to take deep breaths during the massage to help relax your muscles and to encourage the release of tension from your abdominal area.
Benefits of Visceral Abdominal Massage?
Visceral abdominal massage offers numerous health benefits, ranging from improved digestion to emotional healing. Below are some of the primary advantages of this practice –
Digestive Health
One of the most well-known benefits of visceral abdominal massage is its positive effect on digestion. By manually stimulating the intestines and stomach, this technique can help relieve constipation, bloating, and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). The massage enhances peristalsis, the wave-like contractions of the digestive tract that move food through the intestines, aiding in better nutrient absorption and waste elimination.
Detoxification
The abdominal region houses vital organs responsible for detoxification, such as the liver, kidneys, and intestines. Gentle manipulation of these organs can promote lymphatic drainage, reduce stagnation, and enhance the body’s natural detoxification processes. By improving circulation, toxins and metabolic waste products are more efficiently eliminated from the body.
Pain Relief and Musculoskeletal Health
Chronic pain conditions, particularly in the lower back and pelvic region, can be linked to dysfunction in the visceral organs. Abdominal massage helps to improve organ mobility and reduce adhesions caused by surgeries, infections, or inflammation. This can lead to better posture, reduced tension in surrounding muscles, and decreased pain.
Improved Circulation and Lymphatic Flow
By stimulating blood and lymphatic circulation, visceral abdominal massage supports oxygen and nutrient delivery to vital organs while facilitating the removal of waste products. This can improve overall vitality and immune system function.
When to consider Visceral Abdominal Massage?
Although visceral abdominal massage has been practiced for centuries, scientific research on its effectiveness is still emerging. Some studies have highlighted its benefits in various health conditions:
Visceral Abdominal Massage and Fertility?
If you are a woman, Visceral Abdominal Massage can focus particularly on your reproductive and digestive organs. This technique is believed to offer several potential fertility benefits that could help address underlying factors contributing to difficulty conceiving.
Reduces Scar Tissue
The massage helps increase circulation to the pelvic area, including the uterus, ovaries, and fallopian tubes. Enhanced blood flow can improve the health of these organs and may help with ovulation, implantation, and overall reproductive function.
Improves Blood Flow
If there is any scarring from previous surgeries (such as C-sections or fibroid removal), adhesions, or other pelvic trauma, visceral massage might help break down scar tissue. This can potentially improve the movement and function of the reproductive organs, improving fertility chances.
Relieves Stress
Infertility can be stressful, and stress itself can negatively impact reproductive hormones and ovulation. Abdominal massage can help reduce stress and promote relaxation by stimulating the parasympathetic nervous system, which can have a positive effect on the body’s hormonal balance.
Helps Align Organs
Sometimes, reproductive organs may be slightly displaced due to tension, injury, or other factors. The massage can help to “reposition” the organs, which might improve their function, particularly the uterus and ovaries, creating a more favourable environment for conception.
Promotes Lymphatic Drainage
By stimulating the lymphatic system, visceral massage may help remove toxins and waste products from the body, which can improve overall reproductive health.
Balances Hormones
The technique may help support the hormonal system by reducing stress hormones, promoting a more balanced environment for ovulation and fertility.
Increases Relaxation of Muscles and Ligaments
Sometimes, tightness in the abdominal muscles or ligaments can cause discomfort or interfere with the functioning of the pelvic organs. By loosening these muscles, the massage may help to restore the normal alignment and function of these structures.
While visceral abdominal massage can offer these potential benefits, it is important to note that it’s best used as a complementary therapy alongside other treatments. Ideally, we would like to work in consultation with your gynaecologist, fertility specialist, or medical expert. Infertility can be caused by various factors, and it’s always wise to consult with a healthcare provider or fertility specialist to understand the root cause and develop a comprehensive treatment plan.
Visceral Abdominal Massage and Emotions
In the context of visceral abdominal massage, the idea that organs are linked to emotions comes from various healing traditions, particularly in practices like Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and some bodywork therapies. These systems suggest that different organs are associated with specific emotions, and that emotional blockages or trauma can manifest physically in the body.
Liver and Anger
In TCM, the liver is often linked with the emotion of anger. When there’s emotional stress or unresolved anger, the liver’s energy (or “Qi”) is said to become stagnant, leading to physical discomfort in the abdominal area, particularly on the right side. Visceral abdominal massage may help to release tension in the liver and surrounding areas, potentially helping to alleviate anger-related physical tension.
Stomach and Worry
The stomach is commonly associated with worry or overthinking. Digestive issues like bloating, gas, or indigestion can sometimes be connected to emotional stress and mental overactivity. Visceral abdominal massage can help release tension in the stomach area, promoting a sense of calm and improving digestion by addressing emotional blockages.
Lungs and Grief
The lungs are sometimes linked to grief or sadness. People experiencing deep emotional pain might carry tension in their chest and diaphragm, leading to shallow breathing, tightness, or even respiratory issues. Abdominal massage, by focusing on the diaphragm and upper abdomen, may encourage deeper breathing and emotional release, helping to ease grief-related tension.
Kidneys and Fear
The kidneys, in some traditions, are thought to be associated with fear and insecurity. Chronic fear or anxiety can manifest as tightness or discomfort in the lower back and abdominal region. Visceral abdominal massage can help relieve this tension, promote relaxation, and restore balance to the body’s energy flow.
Uterus and Emotional Trauma
In women, the uterus is sometimes associated with emotional trauma or suppressed emotions, especially related to past experiences like abuse, miscarriage, or unprocessed grief. Visceral abdominal massage focuses on the pelvic and reproductive organs, potentially helping release emotional blockages and physical tension stored in the pelvic area.
Visceral abdominal massage, by working on the abdomen and its organs, may help to facilitate emotional release. It’s believed that when physical tension is released, it can open the way for emotional release as well. For some, this type of bodywork allows them to access emotions they may have been unaware of or unable to express, which can lead to emotional healing and improved overall well-being.
Of course, these ideas are rooted in holistic and traditional healing practices, and while visceral abdominal massage may help alleviate tension, it’s important to approach emotional healing as part of a broader strategy that includes self-care, therapy, and possibly medical treatment if necessary.
Techniques of Visceral Abdominal Massage
At Advaya we combine several visceral abdominal massage techniques, depending on your needs –
Chi Nei Tsang
Originating from Taoist healing traditions, Chi Nei Tsang focuses on deep, rhythmic manipulations of the abdominal organs to clear energy blockages and promote emotional release. This method works holistically, addressing both physical and energetic imbalances.
Maya Abdominal Therapy
Developed by Dr. Rosita Arvigo, this technique is rooted in traditional Mayan healing practices. It involves deep tissue manipulation and gentle repositioning of the uterus and intestines to improve digestive and reproductive health. It is often used to address menstrual irregularities, infertility, and digestive disorders.
Osteopathic Visceral Manipulation
This method, developed by French osteopath Jean-Pierre Barral, employs gentle, precise manipulations to restore mobility and function to internal organs. By releasing fascial restrictions, osteopathic visceral manipulation can alleviate pain, improve organ function, and enhance overall well-being.
Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD)
Though not exclusively an abdominal technique, MLD involves gentle, rhythmic strokes to promote lymphatic circulation. This can help reduce abdominal swelling, support detoxification, and improve immune system function. Learn more about our Manual Lymphatic Drainage therapies.
Considerations and Contraindications
While Visceral Abdominal Massage (VAM) offers many benefits, it is not suitable for everyone. Certain conditions may require medical supervision or contraindicate treatment altogether. These include:
Acute Infections & Inflammation
Conditions such as appendicitis, peritonitis, or diverticulitis should not be treated with massage.
Pregnancy
Although we are trained in prenatal massage techniques, we prefer to avoid abdominal massage generally during pregnancy.
Abdominal Aneurysms or Cardiovascular Conditions
If you are challenged by vascular abnormalities we will always ask you to consult your healthcare provider before undergoing visceral massage.
Recent Surgery
Scar tissue manipulation should be approached cautiously, particularly in the early stages of post-surgical recovery.
